RAILS 2, the second Research Applications in Information and Library Studies Seminar was held on 16-17 September 2005 at the National Library of Australia. The seminar built on the success of the inaugural RAILS seminar held at Queensland University of Technology in 2004, continuing the theme of building partnerships among educators, researchers and practitioners and aiming to raise the research profile in the information professions. Presentations covered areas such as the research process, information literacy, library history, improving services to specific groups and understanding the needs and tools of practitioners and professionals.

Not all of the papers presented at RAILS 2 are published in this collection and for those papers not available the abstract is provided. Of those that are published, all but one have been peer-reviewed (the paper by Stephen Ellis was not peer reviewed at the author's request).
