The inaugural RAILS (Research Applications in Information and Library Studies) Seminar was held on the 20th of September, 2004, at the Gardens Point Campus of Queensland University of Technology, just before the ALIA 2004 Biennial Conference at the Gold Coast. The seminar, which drew academics and practitioners, showcased research at a number of Australian universities into information services and use, and was intended to demonstrate how this research might be applied. Presentations covered areas such as information needs, information repositories, information delivery, information literacy, informetrics and information communities.
For each presentation, a reaction was provided by an invited respondent, and there was discussion on the methodological approaches and practical applications. The peer-reviewed papers are included in this collection, along with an edited summary of reactions and discussions. An introductory paper canvasses issues such as the gap between research and practice, and the development of a research agenda.
