Mary Carrol is the Associate Course Director in the School of information studies. Her responsibilities include assiting the Course Director meet needs of students in the school and taking a lead role in the Bachelor of Information Studies (BIS) , Master of Information Studies (MIS) and Graduate Certificate in Audiovisual Archiving courses. Prior to employment at CSU she was an Early Career Development Fellow at RMIT University, Melbourne and also worked for many years in LIS Vocational Education. She has published in the area of history of librarianship, vocational education and library education and LIS pedagogy. Her PhD was both an historical and contemporary investigation into the role sectoral educational divisions have played in the construction of LIS professional identity in Australia. Currently she is undertaking research for the National Centre for Vocational Education Research into the provision of information infrastructure by private training organisations in Australia .
Research interests
- The provision of information infrastructure and its relationship to access and equity
- The role of education in defining work place structures in Australia
- Relationships between vocational education and higher education particularly with regards to success and failure, issues of articulation and professional engagement
- History of vocational education in Australia
- History of education for the library industry in Australia
- Libraries and their role in the community and as social and cultural institutions
- The impact of outside agencies, particularly philanthropic agencies have had on the Australian education landscape
