Bio

Asim Qayyum completed his PhD from the University of Toronto (UofT) in June 2005, specializing in the areas of Information Management and Knowledge Dissemination. He then worked at the School of Information Sciences in University of Puerto Rico for three years before moving to Charles Sturt University. Asim also holds an undergraduate degree in Electrical Engineering and an MBA with specialization in Management Information Systems. He started his career as a design engineer and then worked as a business analyst for many years before moving into the field of information studies as an academic.

Asim is currently engaged in several projects. One project investigates the information needs and practices of refugees and other settlers in regional areas, and explores how their information practices evolve or conform within the new cultural settings that they find themselves in.  Another project focuses on studying the changing news seeking behaviours of the youth as the news media makes the transition from traditional print formats to online publishing. Among some notable accomplishments, Asim was part of a team which was recently awarded the Faculty’s competitive research award. Previously, Asim won a research grant from the Online Computer and Library Center (OCLC) in 2007, and has held many other competitive institutional grants to carry out his research projects. While doing his PhD in 2004, he was awarded the prize for best paper in information sciences by the New England chapter of the American Society for Information Sciences & Technology (ASIS&T). As a doctoral candidate, he was also the recipient of Univ. of Toronto's open scholarship and Humanities Research Council’s travel grants. His doctoral studies were sponsored by the International Council for Canadian Studies after he was awarded the commonwealth scholarship.
