Affordability, diversity, universal learning, and alternatives to schooling
Richard Liu, School of Teacher Education, CSU
Great efforts have been taken in the past seven decades to reform schools to improve the quality of education. However, it has been argued that rather than reforming the school system, alternative education avenues need to be sought in that the school system itself has become a hindrance to learning. Drawing upon a critical examination of the rapidly changing social landscapes in light of affordability and diversity as well as a revisit to the principles of universal learning, in this presentation I will unpack some of the modern school’s detrimental effects on learning. It is suggested at the end of the presentation that several interconnected alternatives to the current schooling be cautiously experimented.
