Invitation from the Conference Chair

It gives me great pleasure to invite you to the 59th Australian Cereal Chemistry Conference to held in Wagga Wagga NSW, Australia. It is quite appropriate to be holding  the Australian Cereal Chemistry Conference Wagga Wagga as it is a region with a long association with cereal breeding and quality. In 1893, Nathan Cobb, a plant pathologist working with William Farrer planted trials of more that 200 wheat varieties in the area which was the beginning of a long history of cereal research for the area.  Eddie Graham, who was appointed Minister for Agriculture in 1944 (and is also the name-sake of one of our major sponsors) was the force behind the push to develop an institute in the Wheat belt that would develop wheat varieties with both disease resistance and superior baking quality. These developments eventually led to the establishment of the Wagga Wagga Agricultural Institute.

In parallel, Charles Sturt University (CSU) has grown from a series of small educational institutions including the Wagga Agricultural College, into a world class University who is the major education provider to inland Australia. CSU has strong programs in both agriculture and food science.

Wagga’s long history in the area of cereal chemistry and it’s critical mass of cereal science researchers along with the many attractions of the region makes it an ideal location for the 2009 Australian Cereal Chemistry Conference.

The theme of this year’s conference is “Quality Science for the Country” and we will be showcasing some the country’s highest quality scientists. Our theme is fitting as this year will be the first time in almost 20 years that the conference is being held in regional Australia. The sub-themes of the conference are:

I look forward to meeting you all at this exciting event.

Yours sincerely,
