After graduation from my BSc Pharmacy, I registered as a pharmacist in the United Kingdom and worked first in a large District General Hospital.  After 3 years I had the opportunity to move to the Birmingham Children’s Hospital, a tertiary level specialist unit serving a population of 14 million.  Working as part of the multi-disciplinary nutrition support team, specialising in parenteral nutrition (PN), I became increasingly involved in research.  I gained my Master’s from the University of Birmingham for a thesis on computer applications in nutrition support, which included the development of two software suites, one for pharmacy preparation of PN and one for the bedside prescribing.  Working as clinical pharmacist to the intensive care unit, I became increasingly interested in the behaviour of medicines in parenteral fluid systems and this led to interest in maintaining circulatory access, particulate contamination in infusion fluids and the use of intravenous in-line filtration.  I submitted my PhD based upon work looking at the effects of dissolved oxygen in PN solutions.  In 1994 I took my first academic appointment at the University of Otago in Dunedin, NZ, where I continued to work as a clinical pharmacist working in pain management and palliative care.

Based upon my experience in multi-disciplinary healthcare teams I was invited in 2005 to take Australia’s foundation Chair of Rural and Remote Pharmacy.  A new and different challenge but one which I believe like most other problems in healthcare, will always be better when health professionals work together in teams.
