After completing a BSC (Hons) at University of New England in 1981 I began employment in a variety of cardiovascular and respiratory clinical diagnostic and measurement roles in large public teaching hospitals around Australia. Research in these areas formed a considerable component of my work. On moving to Wagga Wagga in 1995 and gaining employment with Charles Sturt University, I wrote a series of specialist respiratory science subjects that formed the first postgraduate qualification (Graduate Certificate in Respiratory Science) for those working in lung function laboratories. I subsequently developed courses in asthma and respiratory management and clinical neurophysiology. All courses have been developed in consultation with the relevant professional societies to ensure their relevance to current and future clinical practice.
I completed my PhD (Respiratory epidemiology and management) at Charles Sturt University in 2004 and have continued to investigate mechanisms to improve diagnosis and management of respiratory diseases in rural Australia. I am currently involved in two large scale projects, the first investigating implementation of asthma management services in community pharmacies and the second investigating the burden of chronic obstructive lung disease in rural NSW.
I am a member of the following professional organisations:
- Australian and New Zealand Society of Respiratory Science
- European Respiratory Society
- Thoracic Society of Australia and New Zealand
- Asia-Pacific Society of Respirology
- Australian Asthma and Respiratory Educators Association
- Association for Neurophysiology Technologists of Australia
- Australasian Lung Foundation
