Profile
Jillian Dunphy joined CSU in 2006 to become a full-time lecturer and subject coordinator. Jillian’s qualifications include a Bachelor of Science with Honours in genetics and a PhD in molecular endocrinology, (both awarded by Monash University). Previously Jillian has conducted medical research at the University of Melbourne, the University of Virginia, and the University of Queensland. Her current research interests include the interactions between health, health care and the natural and social environments, graduate resilience, and health literacy. Jillian has taught at both the undergraduate and post-graduate level to a very diverse population of students, ranging from vets to occupational therapists.
Roles and positions
- Lecturer in Biomedical Science, Charles Sturt University 2006-current
- Learning and Teaching Committee Chair, School of Community Health, 2010-2011
- Biomedical Science Team Leader, School of Community Health, 2008-2010
- Post-doctoral research officer, University of Queensland, 2005-2006
- Post-doctoral research associate, University of Virginia, 2001-2005
- Post-doctoral research fellow, University of Melbourne, 1998-2001
Teaching
Jillian Dunphy has a diverse range of teaching experience including research student supervision, thesis marking, subject coordination, subject convening, and course design, review and development. Undergraduate teaching has included fundamental physiology, pathophysiology, and pharmacology of all body systems, exercise science, and genetics. Undergraduate teaching has involved both internal and distance modes of teaching, with experience in flexible on-line delivery as well as face-to-face teaching. Post-graduate teaching has involved co-supervision of masters and PhD research students. Jillian has also been involved in developing education for sustainability curricula, and curricula evaluation. She has been the co-recipient of a team teaching award, and is a member of the Australian and New Zealand Association of Health Professional Educators.
Subjects delivered
- BMS126 Foundations of Human Physiology
- BMS263 Pharmacology for Allied Health Professionals
- BMS192 Human Bioscience 2
Innovations in teaching
- Development of on-line resources and study modules for dual mode, multi-campus, flexible subject delivery that simultaneously supports multiple learning styles.
- Development of interprofessional education for sustainability curricula.
Research and Publications
Jillian Dunphy’s substantial research contributions have expanded knowledge and practice in both cell and molecular biology, and the scholarship of learning and teaching. Jillian has authored or co-authored 11 peer-reviewed journal articles, 2 invited journal reviews, 1 invited book chapter, 2 provisional patents, 1 international patent, 1 creative work, and 15 conference presentations. Her research has been cited over 280 times, including citations in prominent journals such as Nature Reviews Molecular Cell Biology (2008 impact factor = 35.423). Current research foci include interactions between health, health care, and natural and social environmental sustainability, graduate resilience, health literacy, and undergraduate health care learning and teaching.
