Tim Retchford joined CSU in 2006 as a part-time lecturer of Physiotherapy. Tim's qualifications include an honors degree in Physiotherapy and a Masters degree in Sports Physiotherapy (both awarded by the University of Melbourne). He is currently enrolled in a PhD investigating the role of the hip muscles in the development of hip pathology. As a physiotherapist he has worked in a variety of settings including private practice, public and private hospitals and occupational rehabilitation. He has toured overseas with sporting teams. Tim currently also works as a clinical physiotherapist. He has previously taught physiotherapy and medical students at the University of Melbourne.

Teaching

In 2008/2009 Tim was involved in a Physiotherapy course review that resulted in a new course being offered in 2010.  He has also preformed regular updates to his subjects to ensure currency.

Innovations in Teaching

Tim has a variety of teaching experience including in the class room as well as clinical education in the campus-based Allied Health Clinic and in innovative local and international clinical experiences (overseas Sports/acute care placement and work with Australian Ski Team).   In 2009 Tim initiated an overseas clinical experience for Physiotherapy students to East Timor primarily treating athletes competing in a gruelling week-long bike race.  In 2010 the program was expanded to include nursing/para medical students, with students designing a running a first aid/physiotherapy clinic (http://www.abc.net.au/local/photos/2010/10/06/3031239.htm).  The program was repeated again in 2011 this time in collaboration with the National Critical Care and Trauma Response Centre.  Tim is currently planning a pilot project to a similar event in Langkawi, Malaysia for 2012. 

Research

Currently enrolled in PhD through University of Melbourne investigating the association between hip pathology and hip muscle function.  Despite the prevalence of hip pathology, there is a dearth of literature on hip muscles.  I am hoping the findings of my research will help improve the specificity of exercise therapy for the hip.

Professional & Community Engagement

Tim maintains his Physiotherapy skills running a part-time practice in his home town of Mt Beauty.  As well as general work, he is the current Physiotherapist to the Australian Ski Team in the winter months and during the summer treats some of Australia’s best distance runners.
