Since gaining her Bachelor of Dental Surgery qualification at The University of Sydney, Associate Professor Cheryl Chapple has enjoyed a diverse dental career with extensive experience in teaching, research, private practice and public hospital practice in Australia and the United Kingdom.
Associate Professor Chapple holds a Master of Science in Periodontology from the University of London and a Doctor of Philosophy in the field of periodontal pathogenesis from the University of Sydney. Her academic and clinical teaching experience spans over 30 years. She has a keen interest in small group learning, development of clinical skills in periodontics, preventive dentistry and gerodontics.
Associate Professor Chapple is a hospital recognised specialist and provides periodontal services in Dubbo and Orange for the Greater Western Area Health Service and Westmead Centre for Oral Health for Sydney West Area Health Service.
Her main research interests and achievements are in the field of histopathology and microbiology of periodontal diseases. Being awarded a National Health and Medical Research Council postgraduate scholarship and grants including the inaugural Australian Dental Association, NSW Branch, Postdoctoral Fellowship has supported Associate Professor Chappleās research on the periodontal pocket wall biofilm.
In addition to her position as Lecturer in dentistry at CSU, Associate Professor Chapple holds an honorary Senior Clinical Research Fellow appointment in the Institute of Dental Research at Westmead Centre for Oral Health, and has been involved in a number of collaborative clinical studies with Sydney West Area Health Service, the University of Sydney and indigenous communities.
