Another Successful Breeding Season

After the arrival of six healthy Connemara cross Thoroughbred foals, our broodmares were once again managed by the 2nd year Equine Science students.  Our students must be congratulated on their hard work, with all 10 of our broodmares returning positive pregnancy scans.

Seven mares are once again in foal to resident stallion Celtic Basil; Armadancer, Our Divine Lady, Vanilla Mist, Red, Sand Model, Zilla and Ash.  Our other three mares Trixie, Tirau Beauty and Osmolite have been covered by Australian Stock Horse stallions Bluff Downs Bega (by Warrenbri Omega) and Sheros Traditional Acres (by Acres Destiny).

We are excited with the arrival of another crop of foals due in August and September 2012.

Six Healthy Connemara x Thoroughbred Foals for CSU

2nd Year Equine Science students have successfully foaled down six CSU-bred Connemara cross Thoroughbred foals, all sired by resident stallion Celtic Basil.

First to grace our nursery paddocks was CSU Dancing In Thyme, a burnt buckskin filly foal from Armadancer who arrived on the 21st August 2011.  This filly is a very strong type who should make a great pony-club mount.

A little over a week later CSU Sandalwood, a bay filly from Sand Model arrived on 30th August 2011.  This filly oozes performance and will no doubt be very competetive in the Olympic disciplines.

CSU Bowie, buckskin colt from Ash, and CSU Pot of Gold, grey colt from Follow The Rainbow both arrived on 3rd of September and kept the students on their toes all night with the dual arrival.  Bowie looks another promising pony club or all-rounder mount and Pot Of Gold has a very uphill action and will look right at home in the dressage ring or even shown in harness.

We welcomed CSU Dark Knight from TB mare Red, a lovely black-brown colt on the 4th September.  This colt will also make a lovely mount in the olympic disciplines or pony club.

Finally the last of our CSU mares, Encosila, foaled on 3rd October, producing a lovely taffy filly, CSU Marigold.  Marigold will be a great second pony and allrounder.

We are thrilled at the variation of types Celtic Basil has produced and equally as pleased that they all have his placid, trainable and easy going temperament.

Well done to the Equine Science class of 2012 on foaling down these six mares at all hours of the night, and for handling the foals in their first two months of life.

These foals will be weaned and handled by the 1st year Equine Science students in March 2012, and then broken in by 1st year Equine Science students in August 2013.

Successful Breeding Season

The Equine Centre has been a hive of activity with Celtic Basil standing his first season at CSU and the safe arrival of four foals.

Celtic Basil has done a wonderful job getting our 8 broodmares in foal at a 100% fertility rate.  The Equine Science students must be commended for their hard work in managing the breeding program and we look forward to receiving Basil's foals on the ground in 2011.

We have welcomed the safe arrival of three purebred Connemara foals and one Connemara x Thoroughbred foal this season, foaling down under the watchful eyes of the Equine Science students.

Glenormiston Flashy Diamond, leased to CSU by Glenormiston Stud at QLD, has produced a lovely black-grey filly foal by Wychwood Willy Wagtail who will be a valuable addition to our breeding program in a few years time.  Glenormiston Lisheen, also leased to CSU by Glenormiston Stud, has produced a black-grey colt by Wychwood Willy Wagtail.  Celtic Georgiana leased by Penny Brown has produced a nice strong bay colt by Wychwood Willy Wagtail.  Our Divine Lady has produced a lovely attractive chestnut colt who should make a great performance or pony club horse.

Next year the Equine Science students will be responsible for weaning and handling these young horses as part of their first year of studies.

Arrival of Celtic Basil (224)

CSU and owner Cheryl Heynemann are pleased to announce the arrival of the purebred Connemara pony stallion Celtic Basil who will be standing at CSU in the 2010 and 2011 seasons.

Celtic Basil is a grey stallion foaled in 2005 by Springfield Devereux (163) from Celtic Thyme (1587) and stands at 14.2hh.

Celtic Basil is a wonderful young pony stallion who is well mannered, quiet, athletic and structurally correct.  Basil has a great front, quality bone and length of leg strongly coupled with an active hind quarter producing elevated paces and careful jumping technique.

Celtic Basil is a balanced, athletic pony ideal for breeding performance ponies and galloways to suit Dressage, Jumping, Eventing, Hacking or the invaluable al round riding horse of great type and temperament.

Basil has been leased to CSU and will prove to be a valuable asset in the breeding program as well as the teaching curriculum where students have hands-on learning experiences in all aspects of stallion management, natural and artificial equine reproduction.

Chilled semen from Celtic Basil is available at $400 plus handing and transport fees.  Please contact the Equine Centre Office on (02) 6933 2323 or e-mail to inquire or make a booking.

Connemara Breeding Program Update

CSU has been fortunate to produce two Connemara fillies in 2009 by Wychwood Willy Wagtail (pictured below).  A purebred grey filly foal was produced from Glenormiston Flashy Diamond and will be a valuable addition to CSU's own Connemara breeding herd.  A part-bred bay filly was produced from the thoroughbred broodmare Our Divine Lady and should mature into a good sized pony club mount.  Both fillies will be weaned and handled by the Equine Science students and will commence breaking in to saddle once they reach two years of age.

Connemaras on Campus

Connemaras on CampusThe collaboration between Charles Sturt University and the Connemara Pony Breeders Society of Australia was celebrated recently with the second meeting held this year on Saturday 18 April.

Wagga Wagga turned on its lovely warm autumn weather for the day which was busy with horses being washed and brushed and smartly kitted out for the events.

The Parade of Ponies featured partbreds, geldings, mares and stallions including those leased by the University for the veterinary and equine science programs.Hunter Doughty

The parade was followed by a Working Hunter Class of purebreds followed by partbreds where the horses were worked in the indoor arena in led classes and over a jumping course built by Hunter Doughty.

The chief judge Claire Oakes from Ireland was impressed with the horses presented to her and ranked Glenormiston Flashy Diamond with first place. Flashy is leased by CSU and in foal to Wychwood Willy Wagtail.

John Smart and his team are to be congratulated for their work in preparing the arena and surrounds for the events which received high praise from the participants.

John Bromfield deserves a special mention for his work breaking and riding the ponies with great determination and skill.
