General Introduction

My name is Jane Havelka I am a Wiradjuri woman from the Narromine, Dubbo region.  I am a Lecturer in the School of Nursing & Midwifery.  I have worked in the Dubbo, Forbes and Wagga Wagga hospitals as an Enrolled Nurse for over thirty years.

I have worked in many jobs ranging from cotton chipping, fruit picking, nursing and child care.  In addition I have experience teaching at TAFE, lecturing at Charles Sturt University and conduct Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Mental Health Training to students at Charles Sturt University and community organisations.

I was the Course Coordinator for the Bachelor of Health Science (Mental Health) Djirruwang Program from July 2002 – December 2007, Djirruwang Program Director form September 2004 – December 2006 and Senior Lecturer/Clinical Coordinator January 2007 – August 2008. During this time I have seen many changes. The Djirruwang Program is the first course in Australia to incorporation the National Practice Standards for Mental Health Professionals. It is also the first to incorporate the Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Mental Health First Aid in its curriculum. I am proud to say that during my time with the Djirruwang Program I played a part in the development and implementations of these changes.

In my current position at Charles Sturt University, I am the subject coordinator for the Indigenous nursing subject NRS194 Indigenous Culture, Health and Nursing, and subject coordinator of four of the subjects within the Bachelor of Health Science (Community and Public Health) run of the Dubbo campus. Even though I have only been in this position for a short team it has proven to be challenging, but very rewarding.

I would like to take this opportunity on behalf of the School of Nursing & Midwifery and myself to welcome you all to Wiradjuri country and Charles Sturt University for your studies.  I hope your time with us will be a gratifying and challenging experience which will enhance and encourage lifelong learning.
