Fasciola hepatica infects sheep and cattle, and is a serious human disease in certain countries like Bolivia and in the M East. At present, there is no vaccine for controlling this parasite infection and drug resistance to the best available chemotherapy is well established within Australia and across Europe. We are interested to evaluate new drugs as potential chemotherapies for F. hepatica. A novel drug, adozelesin, which has proven effective against malaria parasites, targets the AT-rich regions of DNA and is likely to target AT rich regions, such as centromeric DNA, in other parasites. The aim of this project is to culture Fasciola hepatica parasites (juveniles and adults) in the presence of adozelesin to determine the efficacy of the drug in vitro. If effects are observed, and time permits, the student may perform some microscopy to evaluate the effects of the drug on the internal structures of juvenile parasites. The student will receive training over 10 weeks in tissue culture, cell biology and parasitology.
