The purpose of the School of Animal and Veterinary Sciences (SAVS) Summer Scholarship awards is to provide opportunities for excellent undergraduate students to experience research work first hand and to encourage students to consider undertaking university postgraduate study in fields of research activity in the School.
The Scholar will be expected to develop skills and knowledge in the research area selected with the aim of preparing the results of their work for publication or presentation.
Interested students should examine the research profiles of staff under the five Research Clusters on the SAVS website at http://www.csu.edu.au/faculty/science/savs/research/. Students should then contact the relevant staff member to discuss a suitable Summer project.
The value of the Scholarship will be $400/week for a maximum of 10 weeks (ie a value of up to $4,000 over a 10 week period). Payment will be made every two weeks into a nominated bank account.
The Scholarship shall be tenable within the School of Animal and Veterinary Sciences on the Wagga Wagga campus of Charles Sturt University. The Scholarship may not be held at the same time as any other scholarship. The start date will be determined by agreement between the supervisor and candidate; the tenure should end before the start of the following semester. Hours of work are to be negotiated with the supervisor and Head of School and will normally be 35 hours per week. Every Scholar shall be required to devote the whole time during the tenure of the Scholarship to the research programme. The Scholar shall not undertake any additional paid employment, except by the consent of the supervisor and the Head of School.
The Scholarship is open to all undergraduates with an interest in research in the broad discipline areas of animal, equine and veterinary sciences. Applicants who are Australian citizens or permanent residents of Australia shall receive priority but applications from other nationalities will be considered.
In determining the suitability of a candidate for the Scholarship, the Selection Committee shall take into consideration the candidate's academic record, the referees' comments and any other relevant information that has been provided. The decision of the Selection Committee shall be final. The Selection Committee shall comprise the members of the School’s Research and Graduate Studies Committee (RGSC) with the option for co-opting CSU academic staff, which shall make recommendations to the School Research and Graduate Studies Committee.
Each successful applicant shall be required to submit a report (no more than two A4 pages) of their research to their supervisor and the RGSC at the conclusion of their study period.
