Karianne was a Lecturer in the Section of Clinical Pathophysiology, Department of Farm Animal Health, at the University of Utrecht before joining CSU in 2007.

In the Netherlands she completed her PhD while participating in 4 EU-funded projects; two in relation to Small Ruminant Lenti viruses (SRLV) in sheep and goats, one to strengthen the European goat industry by developing a new reproduction strategy, including the distribution of kidding during the year and one aimed at dissemination of Animal Insemination Technology for goats in Europe.

In 2006 Karianne commenced her training for a specialist qualification on small ruminant health.
