Penny’s research explores the experiential dimensions of tourism, resource management and outdoor recreation. Recent projects include her doctorate which examines the social construction of Jenolan Caves as a tourist site, an exploration of sense of place for protected area management staff, and iterative learning cycles in the development of sustainable behaviours. She is supervising both doctoral and honours students around sustainability and has received funding from the Department of Environment and Climate Change for a project that aims to reduce energy consumption across student residences in Charles Sturt University. Penny's teaching areas include leadership and group dynamics, teamwork, recreation management, sociology of outdoor recreation and tourism, and karst tourism.
She has presented at national and international conferences, and has been invited to speak at regional forums. She plays an active role in Parks and Leisure Australia, and is an editorial member of the Australasian Parks and Leisure journal.
