His research has included the study of the life history of several species of freshwater fish in southeastern Australia, community dynamics and habitat use of fish in estuaries in Western Australia and flow–related aspects of the ecology of fish and macroinvertebrates in Tasmania and the Murray–Darling Basin. His current research interests include: the ecology and recruitment processes associated with the early life history of fishes, the relationship between flow and habitat use of fishes and macroinvertebrates, movement patterns of fish in rivers and the history of environmental changes associated with rivers in the Murray–Darling Basin.
