Every undergraduate subject offered by the School of Environmental Sciences is conducted face to face with lectures, tutorials and field work at the internationally recognised environmentally friendly campus at Thurgoona, a suburb of Albury. In the rammed earth class rooms and offices, recycled timber, non toxic paints and floor coverings, natural light, solar heating and passive cooling have been used to minimise our impact on the environment. Even our wastewater is recycled, and composting toilets means no sewage is ever released into our waterways. No other School of Environmental Sciences practices what it preaches as much as we do.Studying at Charles Sturt University in Albury has benefits far beyond the piece of paper you gain at graduation. For just a fraction of the cost of renting in capital cities, you can either live in town just a short walk from the pubs, night clubs, cafes and restaurants of Albury, or out of town in an old farmhouse with your own chooks and vegie patch. Most students find part time work easy to find in Albury, while the low cost of living means you will have more time and money for the things you really want to do.

We realise not everybody has the time to enrol full time and attend all classes on campus. The School of Environmental Sciences also offers all its subjects by distance education (DE) utilising printed material, web resources and residential schools to complete the educational experience. DE is usually undertaken part time and is ideal for people wishing to study from home, people who are working and want to upgrade or attain new qualifications, or for people who want a mix of on-campus and distance education study. Even students studying on campus find that some distance education can help, especially if you are unable to attend lectures for work or other reasons. As many students often find short term work in environmental jobs even before graduating, being able to study some subjects by distance means you can also mix the type of study you undertake to suit you.
When you study by DE you are not left to fend for yourself. All subjects utilise a web–based forum so that discussion between students and lecturers is easy and frequent. Many subjects also have a residential school that gives you the opportunity to gain hands on learning, interact face to face with your lecturers and meet fellow students. Most residential schools are undertaken in Albury and contain a mix of presentations, hands on practical sessions and field trips.
All students who enrol as a DE student receive all the facilities offered by the University including access to the library, the student union, counselling services, cheap loans for study purposes and access to all the on campus functions offered throughout the year. You can even transfer to full or part time on–campus study at any time if you wish.
