My PhD research explores linkages between sustainability, natural resource management and public participation policy and practice. The focus is on a key aspect of The Living Murray Initiative which seeks to balance a range of local and broader community interests on river and ecosystems health. In particular, I am interested in who is involved and how; why the concept of communities has been embraced; what interaction occurs between actors; and the outcomes that result? The Living Murray Initiative has been selected due to a range of significant ecological values, the presence of multiple communities of interest and the strong natural, social and cultural connections to place. Research findings should contribute to improved NRM planning, management and governance outcomes.
