Having chosen to train as an actuary rather than a scientist from school, I was always jealous of scientists because of their freedom to pursue interesting topics and form their own ideas, based on their own skills and ability. When the opportunity came to study ecology, one toe in the water was enough to convince me that this was what I wanted - the ability to take an idea, conduct research in interesting places with interesting people, and turn out original ideas about how parts of the world work. While I currently concentrate on spatial aspects of interactions between birds and mistletoes, I'm always on the lookout for challenges with other organisms and in other contexts.
Why Isn't the World Full of Mistletoes
