I have a keen interest in the role of birds in horticulture and their management for production advantages and conservation. This had lead me to my current research which will explore the costs of bird damage in almond orchards and explore spatial and temporal variation in damage and the influence of landscape features on this variation. The study will also examine the relationships among crop development, bird physiology and foraging behaviour and possible benefits that birds might bestow on growers through various ecosystem services such as controlling pests, cycling nutrients or disposing of damaged nuts that would otherwise have to be out-sorted during processing. Conservation of native bird species otherwise regarded as pests in agriculture may be boosted by producers recognizing the valuable services they provide.
