I trained as a General and Psychiatric Nurse in the UK, before undertaking my teaching certificate and then a 'night school' MA in State, Policy and Social Change, with a major in Ethnic Minorities and Mental Health Care. My PhD, at La Trobe University in Victoria, is an examination of mental hospital administration and the decline of moral therapy as the treatment of choice in lunatic asylums.
Formerly, I was the Assistant Director of Nursing, and Practice Development Advisor at a large mental hospital in another state of Australia. I have taught at the University of South Australia and at La Trobe, and for around ten years in the hospital sector. I also have experience in a community mental health team in a rural and remote setting in South Australia, as well as in the usual range of in-patient settings.
