Study tips

  1. Don't panic! Look at exams as a challenge that you will succeed at. Turn negative thoughts into positive self-talk.
  2. Access past exam papers and familiarise yourself with the type and number of questions.
  3. Think about the exam from your teacher’s point of view - what the major topics are, what topics have been assessed and which issues have been discussed in the classroom.
  4. Start exam preparation early. Don't leave it until the last minute and try to cram. Make a list of all the topics you need to cover in each subject and work through it over several days. Check these against the syllabus.
  5. Organise your study time so that you study for set periods with short breaks. Be focused and active while you are studying. Summarise, categorize and test yourself.
  6. Eat healthily and get sufficient sleep. Reward yourself for goals achieved.
  7. Practise breathing and other relaxation techniques to help settle your nerves. Use these techniques during the exam.
  8. Don't stay up late the night before exams. Eat a good breakfast on the morning of the exam.
  9. During the exam, allocate each question a set amount of time and stick to it. Start with a question you can answer easily.  If you do run out of time, answer in dot point format rather than leave the answer blank.
  10. Once the exam is complete, don’t over-analyse what you did and didn’t do. Focus on the next exam and remember that there are many pathways to future success. Just do your best!
