These courses have been developed in cooperation with the Western Plains Zoo, Dubbo and are intended to provide a means for persons working in zoos or wildlife parks to extend their knowledge of the successful management of vertebrate species and upgrade their qualifications.

The Graduate Certificate was the first tertiary course in Australia to specialise in captive vertebrate management. Prior to 2001, it was called the Graduate Certificate in Applied Science (Captive Vertebrate Management).

Admission criteria

Graduate Certificate: Applicants will be expected to have:

Graduate Diploma: Applicants must have successfully completed the Graduate Certificate in Captive Vertebrate Management (or the Graduate Certificate in Applied Science (Captive Vertebrate Management)). Applicants must have obtained a grade average of credit or higher in the Graduate Certificate. Applicants without a credit average in the Graduate Certificate will undergo either a face-to-face or telephone interview before an offer is made. Students must also have access to a computer and be competent computer users as they will be required to undertake online literature searches to complete assignments.

Articulation

The Graduate Certificate articulates with the Graduate Diploma and 32 points of credit are awarded in the Graduate Diploma for the Graduate Certificate subjects.

Graduation requirements

To graduate students must satisfactorily complete 32 points for the Graduate Certificate, and 64 points for the Graduate Diploma (comprising the 32 points of credit awarded for the Graduate Certificate and 32 points undertaken during enrolment in the course).
