The Master of Education degree provides a coursework program for professionals who are associated with the practice of education. This includes educators in such fields as:
• primary education
• religious education
• police education
• nurse education
• speech therapy
• counselling/guidance
• secondary education
• consultancy/advisory services
• early childhood services
• youth work
• vocational education
• continuing professional education
• educational administration
• rural education
The degree program is designed to encourage and permit critical appraisal of theory and practice in the education professions; and improve the educator’s professional competence and enlarge the capacity for self development.
As well as offering a general program the Master of Education offers a variety of specialisations.

Admission criteria
An applicant for admission to candidature for the degree of Master of Education must have at least the following minimum qualifications:
• hold the degree of
Bachelor of Education from CSU or another tertiary institution;
or
be a graduate from a
degree course or approved diploma course of CSU and hold the Graduate Diploma
of Education (or its equivalent) from CSU or another tertiary institution;
or
possess other qualifications deemed to be equivalent by the Faculty;*
and
• have been engaged in appropriate professional experience in education (e.g. one year as a teacher, nurse educator, etc.);
and
• have completed any additional qualifying subjects or courses prescribed by the Faculty.
* When interpreting these entry requirements, the Faculty normally accepts alternative four-year tertiary qualifications such as a first degree plus Teachers Certificate: or a Diploma of Teaching and a postgraduate Diploma of Educational Studies.
Graduation requirements
To graduate, students must satisfactorily complete 64 points (the equivalent of eight subjects)

** The equivalent point value of four subjects could be achieved by studying ERP501 MEd Minor Project
(16 points) plus two other 8 point subjects. If the MEd Minor Project is
included in a specialisation, it must be based on a topic related to the
specialisation.
c) one RESTRICTED ELECTIVE, chosen from anywhere in the course (subject to pre-requisites being met). This elective may be selected from the subjects in the student’s chosen specialisation if he/she wishes to complete a specialisation of five subjects (or the equivalent in point value) rather than four.
Note: A maximum of two Level 4 subjects may be included in a student’s program, with permission from the Course Coordinator.

Note: The completion of EMC500, EPT507, and HRM525 currently entitles students to full credit into the Certificate IV Assessment and Workplace Training (VET) offered by the PIVET organisation (joint CSU-Western Institute of TAFE). This will qualify a student as a Workplace Trainer and Assessor Level 2, to meet the new Workplace Trainer and Assessor competency standards.

Enrolment pattern
EER500 Understanding & Critiquing Educational Research is offered in both sessions but does not need to be studied in a student’s first session. All subjects can be studied in the session chosen by the student, this choice being dependent on subjects being available in a particular session and the meeting of any prerequisites, corequisites and/or enrolment restrictions a subject may have.
Requirements for further study
Students wishing to meet the requirements to proceed at a later stage to a Master of Education (Honours), Doctor of Education or Doctor of Philosophy program should normally complete and achieve at a very high level the three subjects in educational research methodology and the project, viz:

ERP501
MEd Minor Project (16 points) or
its equivalent.
Transfer between postgraduate programs
With the permission of the Faculty and subject to certain stipulations, students may transfer candidature from the Master of Education or the Master of Education (Special Education) degree to the Master of Education (Honours) degree or vice versa with portability of credits gained if appropriate. Appropriately qualified candidates who are enrolled in the Master of Education (Honours) course and who are performing at a satisfactory level may be permitted to transfer candidature to the Doctor of Philosophy or the Doctor of Education program with portability of credits gained if appropriate.
