Admission criteria
Applicants must:
be a graduate, or graduand, from a degree level course at a recognised tertiary institution in an area of specialisation acceptable to the University;*
or
furnish documentary evidence which demonstrates to the satisfaction of the Dean of the Faculty of Education that equivalent requirements to those set out above have been met.
* The University shall ensure, to the best of its ability, that the area of discipline specialisation is acceptable to an appropriate employer by meeting minimal academic requirements for employment as a secondary teacher. However, because of varying employment requirements across different states, it is each students responsibility to have their undergraduate qualification officially assessed by the relevant employing authority.
Graduation requirements
To graduate, students must satisfactorily complete 64 points (eight subjects).
Residential schools
A residential school for distance education students will be held on campus in Bathurst in the first session of enrolment only and it will normally be held in conjunction with school holidays.

Restricted electives

Note: Teacher Librarianship students must enrol in a second Curriculum Method 1 subject as their restricted elective in order to satisfy the NSW Departmental requirements for being a qualified teacher of a subject area. The NSW Department of Education also now requires new teachers to be computer literate.

Practicum
Internal students will complete a minimum eight weeks of practicum experience. This will be split into the equivalent of four weeks in Session 1 and a minimum of four weeks in Session 2.
Experience in Session 1 will involve classes at the junior secondary level, while Session 2 will also involve senior secondary classes.
Practicum 1
In the first teaching practice students will concentrate on:
planning, implementing and evaluating lessons;
and
classroom management.
Students are also expected to collect information relating to:
adolescent conceptual and physical development;
the relationship between the school and its community, especially the rural community;
and
individual differences of students.
Students must satisfy both the academic and practical components of EPT491 Learning & Teaching Practice 1, before progressing to EPT492 Learning & Teaching Practice 2. In addition students should have satisfactorily completed a relevant Curriculum Method 1 subject.
Practicum 2
Session 2 teaching practice will involve a mixture of classes at the junior and senior secondary level. Students will be expected to concentrate on:
planning, implementing and evaluating units of work;
classroom management;
whole school management and pupil welfare;
and
cultural and individual differences.
Students are also expected to collect information relating to:
across curriculum perspectives;
teacher roles outside the classroom;
and
school and faculty organisation and management.
Distance education students will complete a minimum of eight weeks practicum over the two years of the course, comprising two blocks of four weeks. Students arrange the practicum such that it is convenient to themselves and to the schools, using protocols provided by the Practicum Office. Students may complete five weeks in their second practicum to qualify them for registration in Victoria.
