The Doctor of Business Administration provides an opportunity for senior business and related personnel to refine and extend their business education at an advanced level and in a manner which builds upon their existing strengths by exposing them to additional areas of expertise in which they are now required to perform and to give them a formal educational opportunity to demonstrate their capacities in these areas at the highest level.

The DBA program serves the needs of the Australian business community by providing business professionals with the opportunity to consolidate, refine and expand their theoretical bases and to demonstrate their capacity to apply their knowledge in a practical business-oriented way in terms of either business research, business policy or project development and management.

On completion of the course candidates will have:

  extended their knowledge of the disciplines underpinning business;

  developed the ability to successfully identify, investigate and resolve problems in business;

  successfully conducted research into a current problem in business and presented the findings of the research in a thesis;

  developed senior managerial effectiveness in one of the areas of business research;

  appreciated and understood the need for organisations to generate competitive advantage through a full appreciation of the complex nature of diverse issues affecting business and government decision makers globally and nationally;

  been prepared for appointments at the most senior level in government, business and academe.

MBA component:

Admission criteria

Admission to Part 1 (MBA)

Applicants are normally required to have an undergraduate degree from a recognised Australian tertiary institution. Applicants with other academic and/or professional qualifications and/or work experience acceptable to the University will be considered.

Students who have completed an Honours degree in Business will still be required to enrol initially in the MBA program but may be given up to four subjects credit in that program on the basis of Honours work completed.

Admission to Part 2 (DBA)

Students must have completed the CSU MBA program or other CSU Masters degree in business or hold an equivalent qualification from a recognised Australian tertiary institution or a qualification deemed to be equivalent (as determined by NOOSR or by the Faculty of Commerce Board through the Credit and Admissions Sub-Committee of Faculty Board). Applicants through the Association of Professional Engineers, Scientists and Managers Australia (APESMA) will normally have completed the APESMA/Deakin University MBA (Technology Management).

To gain entry to the second part of the program students will normally have achieved a credit average (or equivalent) in their MBA (or equivalent) studies as a demonstration of their capacity to undertake postgraduate work at an advanced level.

In addition to acceptable academic qualifications, an applicant for admission to Part 2 shall:

a)    have a minimum of five years of relevant business experience; and

b)    be working in business or have access to business such that the practical requirements of the program and the research can be undertaken.

Graduation requirements

To graduate students must satisfactorily complete 192 points. A credit package of 64 points is given in the DBA upon completion of the MBA or equivalent program. The DBA component comprises 128 points (coursework component 64 points and thesis 64 points).

DBA thesis program

The student, under the direction of the appointed supervisors, will identify, analyse and propose solutions to current problems confronting professional practice in business through the application of knowledge, thereby improving professional practice or understanding. The contribution to knowledge in a DBA thesis may encompass:

  demonstrating specialised research skills that enhance problem identification and problem solving in management or public policy;

  extending knowledge or change processes in business or professional practice;

  developing innovative approaches to the application of knowledge to the candidate’s business or profession;

  identifying relationships between the research and the wider field of knowledge within the business field.

 

The thesis must contribute to knowledge in one or more of these ways.
