These courses are
designed for graduates of any discipline who wish to gain a professional qualification
in journalism and aim to prepare students for entry-level positions in
journalism.

Admission criteria
Applicants must have an
undergraduate degree in a discipline other than journalism, or its equivalent
in professional experience. Applicants without
tertiary qualifications may demonstrate equivalent professional experience
through five years full-time employment and/or attainment of industry
accreditations in a discipline other than journalism.
Articulation
The Graduate
Certificate and Graduate Diploma articulate with the Master degree and credit
is awarded in the Master degree for subjects completed in the Graduate
Certificate and Graduate Diploma.
Graduation requirements
To graduate,students
must satisfactorily complete 96 points, taken as the equivalent of eight 8 point
subjects and a major project of 32 points (equivalent to a dissertation), for
the Master degree and 32 points (three subjects) for the Graduate Certificate.
Students electing To graduate, with the exit point only Graduate Diploma must
satisfactorily complete 64 points (seven subjects).
Course structure
Students in the Master degree complete:
• two foundation theory subjects designed to provide the necessary background and context for news and public affairs reporting;
• one specialist subject detailing aspects of media law and ethics as they affect professional journalism practice;
• three specialist subjects in journalism designed to prepare students for positions in journalism and public affairs reporting in both public and commercial media;
• a seminar subject which examines problems and issues confronting journalism practice and involves a major research paper and seminar presentation; and
• a journalism project of 32 points, comprising a major series of news stories and features either for print or broadcast media and examining a significant social, cultural or political trend in Australia or overseas.
Students in the
Graduate Certificate complete the two foundation theory subjects designed to
provide the necessary background and context for news and public affairs
reporting and the specialist subject detailing aspects of media law and ethics
as they affect professional journalism practice. Students choosing to exit with
the Graduate Diploma complete the requirements for the Graduate Certificate, and
the second year of the Master course comprising the three specialist subjects
in journalism designed to prepare students for positions in journalism and
public affairs reporting in both public and commercial media, and a seminar
subject which examines problems and issues confronting journalism practice and
involves a major research paper and seminar presentation.
