Coursework professional doctorate

The Doctor of Social Work meets the needs of social work professionals aspiring to the highest levels within their discipline. The program is designed for professionals who wish to extend their levels of professional practice, explore theoretical and practice issues within the profession and to acquire advanced research skills.

Admission criteria

Admission to Part 1 (Master of Social Work (coursework version))

Candidates for admission to the master component of the program shall have an undergraduate degree in social work.

Admission to Part 2 (Doctor of Social Work)

Candidates for admission to the doctoral component of the program shall:

1.     have completed the Master of Social Work (coursework version) or a Master of Social Work or equivalent from another institution; and

2.     have achieved a credit average in their master level study.  This means that a grade lower than a credit may be offset with a grade higher than a credit.

Graduation requirements

To graduate, students must satisfactorily complete 192 points, comprising 64 points for the completion of the Master of Social Work by coursework and 128 points for the doctoral component.

Articulation

This course articulates with the coursework version of the Master of Social Work.

Course structure

Coursework – Master component

Students undertaking the CSU Master degree must complete the following course structure:

1)    four core subjects (32 points):

2)    one restricted elective (8 points) from:

        PHL404     Ethics and the Public Sector

        PHL409     Theories of Justice

4)    and two subjects (16 points) from:

        SWK503    Social Work Practice with Diverse                                                Populations

        SWK407    Relationships in Context

        WEL418    Case Management        

        WEL509    Women and Social Policy

        WEL508    Social Policy Reading Subject

        SWK404    Advanced Group Work

        SWK406    Advanced Human Services                                           Planning

 

Note: Students undertaking the coursework and dissertation version of the course are not eligible for admission to the professional doctorate.

Doctoral coursework component

Doctoral dissertation
