The Graduate Diploma of
Psychology is designed for 1) graduates who do not have a psychology major, but
who wish to pursue a career in psychology, giving them the opportunity to
obtain the necessary accredited, undergraduate psychology major over two or
three years of part-time study, usually by distance education, and 2) those who
wish to update their undergraduate psychology degree.
The Graduate Diploma of
Psychology is accredited by the Australian Psychological Society as equivalent
to an undergraduate major in psychology.

Admission criteria
Applicants must hold an
undergraduate degree from an appropriate tertiary institution and must have
completed subjects PSY101
and PSY102 or their
equivalents.
Credit
To conform to the
Australian Psychological Society (APS) requirements, credit for psychology
subjects taken at other institutions can only be granted for equivalent subjects
in APS accredited courses.
a) Credit will be given for individual psychology subjects studied within the last 10 years that were part of an undergraduate psychology major accredited by the APS.
b) Students with a psychology major that is 10 to 15 years old (from the date of the degree being awarded) can receive credit for four Level 2 psychology subjects.
c) Students whose major is more than 15 years old will meet prerequisites for entry only, unless they are working in a position designated as psychologist or are registered with the APS and can thus show that their knowledge-base is current.
d) If students have some psychology subjects within a degree that are up to 15 years old (from the date of the subjects’ completion), they can receive credit for second level subjects.
Graduation requirements
To graduate, students
must satisfactorily complete 64 points. Graduates will then also have met APS
requirements which are as follows:
Ten approved psychology
subjects, including PSY201
and at least four Level 3 subjects (the two compulsory introductory psychology
subjects that are also part of these requirements will have already been
completed as part of the admission requirements for this course).
Level 2 subjects
PSY201 Research Methods and Statistics in Psychology
PSY204 Psychological Testing
and two of:
PSY202 Developmental Psychology
PSY203 Social Psychology
PSY208 Biopsychology
Level 3 subjects
PSY301 Advanced Research methods and Statistics in Psychology
plus three of the following, one of which must be PSY307 OR PSY308
PSY303 Psychology of Language
PSY304 Psychopathology
PSY305 Psychology of Personality*
PSY306 Theories of Psychological Intervention*
PSY307 Cognition
PSY308 Psychology of Learning
*Students may not
complete both PSY305
and PSY306
