Coursework professional doctorate

The aim of this
professional doctorate is to give candidates a competitive advantage in
achieving high-level success in their profession. This may take the form of
improved individual arts practice or relate to arts based careers such as
tertiary level teaching, arts administration, gallery curatorship, cultural
planning or other similar professions. By providing a major project subject and
choice of topics within the course work subjects the proposed course aims to
cater equally to candidates in all visual and performing arts fields for which
supervision can be provided.

Admission criteria
1) Academic qualifications
Application shall hold one of the following academic qualifications:
a) a master degree by coursework with a minimum of a credit grade in every subject. This includes CSU’s Master of Arts (Visual and Performing Arts) or Master of Visual and Performing Arts degree, which partially articulates with the Doctoral degree; or
b) a Class 1 or Class 2 Division 1 Bachelor (Honours) degree; or
c) a master degree by research; or
d) a doctoral degree.
2) Professional and/or creative arts practice experience
In addition to acceptable academic qualifications, an applicant shall:
a) have a minimum of five years of relevant professional and/or creative arts practice experience; and
b) be working in the arts professions or have access to the relevant professional discipline such that the practical requirements of the program and the research can be undertaken; and
c) submit a folio of their arts practice outcomes for assessment by the Doctor of Visual and Performing Arts Course Committee.
3) Professional standing
Applicants with an outstanding professional profile but who do not have formal academic qualifications may be admitted at the discretion of the Faculty. Such applicants shall also:
a) have a minimum of five years of relevant professional and/or creative arts practice experience; and
b) be working in the arts professions or have access to the relevant professional discipline such that the practical requirements of the program and the research can be undertaken; and
c) submit a folio of their arts practice outcomes for assessment by the Doctor of Visual and Performing Arts Course Committee.
At the discretion of
the Faculty such applicants can also be required to undertake probationary
subjects from the Master of Visual and Performing Arts, such as ART501, ART502 and/or ART503, at the discretion
of the Course Coordinator. A pass at credit level or above will be required.
Credit
Students entering the Doctoral program having completed CSU’s Master of Arts (Visual and Performing Arts) or Master of Visual and Performing Arts degree or that part of the master degree which articulates with the Doctoral program will be granted 64 points credit as follows:
ART501/ART511 Theories of Criticism (16 points)
ART502/ART512 Critical Reading and Research (16 points)
ART503/ART513 Applied Criticism (16 points)
or
ART505/ART515 Exhibition/Performance/Project Exegesis (16 points)
ART504/ART514 Topic Research and Development (16 points)
Applicants for entry to
the Doctoral program who have completed a Master program at another university
will be assessed for credit on a case by case basis.
Graduation requirements
To graduate, students
must satisfactorily complete 192 points.

Master/Doctoral articulation
Students commencing study in the Master of Visual and Performing Arts complete the following subjects during enrolment in that program:
ART501/ART511 Theories of Criticism (16 points)

ART503/ART513 Applied Criticism (16 points)
ART504/ART514 Topic Research and Development (16 points)
Students who are then approved for transfer to the Doctoral program (having obtained a credit grade in all of the above subjects) then complete the following subjects during enrolment in the Doctoral program:
