BMS255 Neuroscience for Health Practice (8)
Prerequisite: (BMS150 and BMS152) or (BMS126 and BMS224) or (BMS126 and BMS123)
This subject provides students with an understanding of fundamental neuroanatomy and neurophysiology. Discussion includes neurological development and ageing, the sensory, motor and autonomic nervous systems as well as the vascularisation of the central nervous system. Higher cortical function and dysfunction are also covered. Knowledge is developed about neurological processes in health and disease across the lifespan The second part of this subject translates this knowledge into the major functional categories of neurological disease (eg peripheral nerve, synaptic junction, toxins, upper motor neuron disorders, lower motor neuron disorders, biochemical diseases) as well as significant social influences that result in neurological disease (eg acquired brain injury). At least one common disease entity is considered as an exemplar of each of these categories. Students will use case studies to apply knowledge in tutorials and practical sessions.
