Contemporary policing, and the future of policing, should be understood in its historical, legal, political and social context. Current police practice, is the result of many dynamics such as particular political systems, organisational reform, industrial relations, changing patterns of criminality and, in many cases, single events. The implications of these dynamics for policing organisations in the future will be discussed.
