Regardless of the level of participation, understanding what constitutes good and poor operational command is essential for contemporary law enforcement practitioners. Effective command of operations, from crime investigation and crowd control to disasters and terrorist incidents, is based on well-informed and defensible strategic planning and decision making. Features of effective operational command, are examined, such as risk assessment, use of information and intelligence, police powers, post-incident care, working with other jurisdictions and agencies, and management of the media and public information.
