This subject will extend students' earlier studies on the nature of terrorism and counterterrorism and the pre-2000 history of both, to focus on terrorism and counterterrorism in the post-9/11 world. In addition to considering recent and current terrorist threats and activities, students will examine current political and religious conflicts with a view to determining the likely future direction of terrorism. In each case, the motivation and modus operandi of the respective groups will be considered, both in themselves and comparatively. Particular attention will be paid to the motivations and impact of the 'suicide bomber' in current terrorist activity.
