IKC100 Reconciliation Education in a Health Context (8)

This subject has been designed and developed to provide health professionals with the necessary Cultural Respect theoretical framework, tools and techniques to reduce culturally based misunderstandings and conflict. This will be achieved through a series of interactive case studies based on first hand experiences from Indigenous people that address political, historical, social and cultural issues that impinge upon current Indigenous well-being. It explores the interactions between Indigenous and non-Aboriginal health service providers in a range of settings and the implications of these experiences on attempts to improve Indigenous well being.
The Cultural Respect Framework for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Health 2004-2009, issued by Australian Health Ministers' Advisory Council states, The Cultural Framework is not another tool for building cross-cultural competency. It is an overarching framework that recognises that a concerted effort across a number of dimensions is
required to systematically lift the cultural competency of mainstream health services (Professionals).
