This subject opens with an overview of Western Christianity in 1500 CE, emphasising the impact of Christian humanism and novel nationalism. It explores the German and Swiss church reformations and the reactions of the Church in Rome; the radical reformation and the survival of religious minorities; English and Scottish church reformations from Henry VIII to Elizabeth I; the Stuart religious settlement and its collapse, and Commonwealth and Restoration settlements of religion.
