THL232 European Church History from 1789 CE (8)
Prerequisite: THL131
This subject reviews the responses of European churches to the French Revolution up to 1815 CE. It examines key theological, apologetic, pastoral and church-state debates in nineteenth-century France, Germany and Italy. European missionary and colonial expansion is briefly treated. Attention is focused on the reaction of European churches to fascism and totalitarianism between 1918 and 1948 CE and to communism after 1917 CE. The effects of the Cold War and increasing secularisation shape a discussion of twentieth-century shifts in theology and the engagement of the churches with Western Europe cultures.
