This subject surveys the biblical sources and major historical developments of Christian thinking concerning the claim that Jesus of Nazareth is the Christ of God. The primary focus, however, is on central themes and methods that have shaped christological debates since 1800 CE. Particular attention is given to the contributions made by narrative, historical, dogmatic, kerygmatic, feminist, liberationist and contextual approaches to the identity and relevance of Jesus Christ in a pluralist society.
