The course aims are to
- encourage and permit critical appraisal of theory, policy, and practice in the field of teacher librarianship;
- improve the teacher librarian's professional competence and enlarge the capacity for self-development;
- provide the basis for collaboration and leadership in schools and in the teacher librarianship profession;
- increase awareness of the importance of educational research and research methods to teacher librarians; and
- permit highly qualified graduates of the program to proceed to higher research degrees such as professional doctorates and PhDs;
- enhance graduates' standing within their educational and teacher librarianship communities;
- enhance students' career prospects; and
- produce graduates who have the capacity to assist in the transformation of education to meet the changing needs of society.

Admission criteria
An applicant for admission to candidature for the degree must have the following qualifications:
- hold a Bachelors degree in Education; or
- hold a Graduate Diploma of Education, Bachelor of Teaching (graduate entry); or
- possess other qualifications deemed to be equivalent by the Faculty.
Professional recognition
Graduates are eligible for admission as Associates of the Australian Library and Information Association (ALIA).
Graduation requirements*
To graduate, students must satisfactorily complete 64 points.
