Combining the educational standards and principles of the University and the Faculty of Arts the course sets out to fulfil the following aims, namely

Bachelor of Teaching (Secondary)

The Bachelor of Teaching (Secondary) course aims to prepare specialist secondary school educators who are critically reflective professional practitioners, knowledgeable in their specialist content area and who are able to operate effectively in a variety of secondary educational contexts in which they find themselves.

Admission criteria

Admission to the program will be through UAC and VTAC systems. Some students may be admitted through the Koori Admission program and the Principal's Early Recommendation Scheme.

NSW Institute of Teachers is the accrediting body for teacher education programs in NSW. In order to satisfy entry requirements, students are required to have NSW HSC English minimum Band 4 (Standard, English as a Second Language or Advanced). Where an applicant does not meet this entry requirement, CSU provides concurrent study in English prior to graduation.

Credit

Students entering the course with Higher School Certificate minimum Band 4 in English Advanced, Standard English or English as a Second Language will be given credit for LIT101 Language and Text.

Graduation requirements*

To graduate, students must satisfactorily complete 264 points (33 subjects), including an eight subject English major. Upon completion of the program, students graduate with two separate awards, the Bachelor of Teaching (Secondary) and the Bachelor of Arts.

Professional recognition

The NSW Department of Education and Training accepts the Bachelor of Arts degree with the major in English as satisfying the registration and certification requirements for employment as a secondary teacher.

The minor sequence of studies meets the NSW Department of Education and Trainings requirements for teacher certification purposes. The Bachelor of Teaching (Sec) has been approved by the NSW Department of Education and Training as an appropriate initial secondary teacher education course.

Course structure

The double degree course consists of 33 subjects organised as follows:

a) A major in English (8 subjects)
b) A major strand in Education (8 subjects)
c) A minor in Drama, History, Psychology or Sociology (4 subjects)
d) Curriculum studies in English, plus either Social Science or Drama (4 subjects)
e) Professional Experience (2 subjects)
f) Compulsory core subjects COM120 and LIT101 Language and Text (required only for students who have not achieved Band 4 in HSC English or equivalent. (2 subjects)
g) Electives selected from BA and/or Education (5 subjects)

To complete an Education major for the Bachelor of Arts students can select eight subjects from the following list. These can be selected from the first level subjects of minors listed above (other than the minor being completed as part of the course requirements), from additional subjects in the Social Sciences (for example, HST213 Civics and Citizenship, GEO164 Earth Systems, POL101 Australian Government and Politics), from Education electives, and from subjects offered from Vianney College for students who want to teach in Catholic schools (for example, VNY111 Catholic Catechism, VNY222 Catholic Religious Education, VNY211 Catholic Biblical Studies).

If students wish to teach to HSC level in NSW schools in an area in addition to English, they will be advised to select two additional subjects from their minor as electives.
