Bachelor of Education (K-12 Middle Schooling)

The principal aim of the Bachelor of Education (K-12 - Middle Schooling) is to provide a comprehensive and relevant undergraduate teacher education program that will prepare candidates for a career in school education.

The course aims to develop graduates who are sensitive to the community context in which they work and to promote personal and professional attitudes and values that will encourage an optimistic, ethically sound, and thoughtful approach to their educational, personal, and professional development.

Full-time 4.5 years (8-10 sessions)*

* concurrent enrolment in the Graduate Certificate in Secondary Education may extend duration. Please consult the course coodrinator for details.

Credit

Students entering the course with Higher School Certificate minimum Band 4 in English Advanced, Standard English or English as a Second Language, and Band 4 in General Mathematics, or completion of Mathematics or Extension Mathematics to an equivalent standard will be given credit for LIT101 Language and Text and MTH100 Foundation Mathematics.

Admission criteria

Normal admission requirements of the University will apply, with students being admitted under the UAC and VTAC systems.

Professional recognition

This course is currenly in the process of accreditation with the New South Wales Institute of Teachers. Once the program has received accreditation with the NSWIT accreditation will also be sought with the Victorian Institute of Teachers (VIT).

Graduation requirements*

To graduate, students must satisfactorily complete 304 points.

*The number of subjects and specific subject choices are described in the course structure and enrolment pattern for the course.

Course structure

The course consists of 27 core education subjects, 7 high school specialist teaching subjects, 2 curriculum method subjects and 2 compulsory subjects (literacy and numeracy). As a result, students undertake a total of 38 subjects (the equivalent of 304 subject points).

The Bachelor of Education (K-12 Middle Schooling) program is concurrently offered with the Graduate Certificate in Secondary Education for those wishing to undertake a fifth year of study entitling candidates to meet the requirements of two high school teaching areas. As such, students who wish to pursue this opportunity must re-apply through the CSU Admissions Office in the fourth year of their concurrent program for the mid-year intake into the Graduate Certificate in Secondary Education.
