This course is designed for students who do not have a prior qualification in mathematics.

Credit

Graduate Diploma of Mathematics

For those students who are studying the course to retrain as secondary mathematics teachers, credit may be given for two subjects studied in their first degree.

Graduate Certificate in Mathematics

No special arrangements apply.

Articulation

The Graduate Diploma and the Graduate Certificate make up an articulated set of courses and credit is given in each higher level course for the subjects completed in the lower.

Graduation requirement

Graduate Diploma of Mathematics

To graduate students must satisfactorily complete 64 points.

Graduate Certificate in Mathematics

To graduate students must satisfactorily complete 32 points.

Course structure

The articulated course consists of the following:

Graduate Certificate in Mathematics

This course consists of 32 points. Students are required to complete the two core subjects and two restricted electives with at least one at level 3 or higher.

Core subjects

MTH101 Computer Aided Mathematics 1
MTH102 Computer Aided Mathematics 2

Restricted Electives

EMM441 Curriculum Methods 1:Mathematics*
MTH203 Numerical Methods
MTH218 Multivariable Calculus

*Only appropriate for practising secondary teachers

Graduate Diploma of Mathematics

This course consists of 64 points. Students are required to complete the two core subjects and either a teaching stream (48 points) or a quantitative stream (48 points). Students must complete at least four subjects at level 3 or higher.

Core subjects

MTH101 Computer Aided Mathematics 1
MTH102 Computer Aided Mathematics 2

For those students in the teaching stream (for retraining as a secondary mathematics teacher), they must also complete the curriculum subject, the professional experience and at least two restricted electives.

Curriculum subject

EMM441 Curriculum Methods 1: Mathematics

Professional Experience

EPT442 Professional Experience 2
Teachers who have been teaching mathematics across years 7-12 for at least one year may apply for proficiency credit based on professional experience. This will be assessed by the subject coordinator for the subject in the Faculty of Education.

Restricted Electives

These subjects are focussed on extending the students mathematics skills. Students must complete a minimum of two mathematics discipline subjects from the list below.

MTH203 Numerical Methods
MTH218 Multivariable Calculus
MTH220 Ordinary Differential Equations
MTH307 Mathematical Modelling
MTH309 Operations Research
MTH328 Complex Analysis
MTH418 Topics in Calculus
MTH419 Linear Algebra
STA401 Postgraduate Scientific Statistics

Two free elective subjects.

Students who do not wish to study more than the six subjects required by the NSWIT may apply to the course coordinator for credit for two subjects studied in their first degree.

For those students in the quantitative stream (to improve their quantitative skills), they must also complete six restricted electives.

Restricted Electives

Students must complete six restricted elective subjects with a minimum of four at level 3 or higher. The restricted elective subjects are those approved by the course coordinator, including but not restricted to
