Admission criteria

Master of Arts (Pastoral Counselling)

Applicants should:

  1. hold an undergraduate degree in theology, psychology or equivalent - applicants with degrees in other disciplines are encouraged to apply; or
  2. have successfully completed the Graduate Diploma of Pastoral Counselling at CSU; or
  3. hold a Graduate Diploma of Counselling from another institution; if so they may be required to complete the core subject theological component of the CSU Graduate Diploma of Theology before being granted admission to the Master of Arts (Pastoral Counselling).

Graduate Diploma of Pastoral Counselling

Applicants should hold an undergraduate degree in theology, psychology or equivalent. Applicants with degrees in any other disciplines are encouraged to apply.

Applicants without an undergraduate degree will be considered, with evidence that they are able to undertake tertiary studies in this area (such as a letter of motivation and two professional or academic references), as assessed by the Course Coordinator.

Credit

Master of Arts (Pastoral Counselling)

Credit of up to 64 points will be granted for successful completion of the Graduate Diploma of Pastoral Counselling offered by CSU, School of Theology.

Graduate Diploma of Pastoral Counselling

Credit will be awarded for 400 level subjects completed in the Graduate Certificate in Pastoral Counselling. Credit will not be awarded for 100-300 level subjects.

Articulation

The Master, the Graduate Diploma and the Graduate Certificate [exit point only] make up an articulated set of courses and credit is given in each higher level course for the subjects completed in the lower.

To graduate students must satisfactorily complete 128 points.

Graduate Diploma of Pastoral Counselling

To graduate students must satisfactorily complete 64 points.

Graduate Certificate in Pastoral Counselling [exit point only]

To graduate students must satisfactorily complete 32 points.

Professional recognition

The School of Theology intends to apply for accreditation for the Master of Arts(Pastoral Counselling) through the Psychotherapy and Counselling Federation of Australia (PACFA).

The course has been written to meet the PACFA training standards for 2009. Graduates of the Master of Arts (Pastoral Counselling) at CSU will be eligible, on completion of further counselling hours, for admission as clinical members of the professional associations which are member associations of PACFA, and for registration with PACFA.
