Normal course duration
Full-time 0.5 years (1.0 sessions)
Admission criteria
Applicants are expected to:
- hold a degree in nursing or equivalent;
- be eligible to register as a nurse in an Australian state,
- have at least two years full-time experience working as a registered nurse; # be currently employed in a mental health setting.
The last criterion is mandatory.
Credit
Students can apply for credit of NRS408 on completion of a NSW Health/CSU Cognitive Behvavioural Therapy and Psychosocial Intervention training course.
Graduation requirement
To graduate students must satisfactorily complete 32 points.
Course structure
The course consists of the following subject options totalling 32 points;
Option A
HLT512 Perspectives and policies in mental health (16 points)
and
NRS408 Psychosocial Interventions in Mental Health Nursing 1
NRS409 Psychosocial Interventions in Mental Health Nursing 2
or
Option B
NRS512 Perspectives in mental health nursing
plus either
NRS516 The therapeutic relationship
or
NRS517 Group process and therapy
and
NRS408 Psychosocial Interventions in Mental Health Nursing 1(8 points)
NRS409 Psychosocial Interventions in Mental Health Nursing 2 (8 points)
Practical Requirements
There is a practical skills component to both NRS408 and NRS409. Initial competence in requisite client assessment and nursing skills will be achieved in the residential school that is held for each subject. Skills acquisition will continue throughout the semester in the students mental health nursing work area and attainment of mastery of competence will be evaluated by suitably experienced and qualified mental health nurses.
This level of clinical skill acquisition and demonstration of competence equates with evidence based practice in other similar university courses both in Australia and overseas.
