Abstract:
Accounting 1 is for any student interested in understanding why and how accounting information is crucial for making key business decisions. The subject not only introduces a wide range of accounting information types but develops the skills students require to be able to analyse, interpret and communicate them. Although the subject focuses on the use of accounting information, skills required in the preparation of cash related reports are also developed.

Objectives:
Upon successful completion of this subject, students should:
- * be able to understand the role of accountants and accounting;
- * be able to analyse financial transactions using the accounting equation;
- * be able to analyse and interpret financial statements including comparing the performance of one business with others;
- * be able to examine sources of business finance;
- * be able to analyse alternative profit plans using cost-volume-profit analysis;
- * be able to prepare master budgets and cash related reports for use in business;
- * be able to identify basic principles of internal control and cash flow management;
- * be able to calculate and report inventory values;
- * be able to use a computer spreadsheet in transaction and financial report analysis; and
- * be able to employ research and presentation skills to solve problems.
Syllabus:
The subject will cover the following topics:
* The role of accounting;
* Analysing business transactions;
* Financial statement analysis;
* Funding the business;
* Managing the business;
* Operating cash;
* CVP analysis; and
* Inventory valuation.
