Abstract:
This subject emphasises the role of management accounting in decision making, particularly in providing information and analysis to support strategic management activity. The focus is on evaluating existing competitive strategies, developing new strategies, and monitoring and assessing progress towards chosen strategies. This subject seeks to assist those involved in organisational decision-making by providing models which can be used in understanding, structuring and resolving problems.

Objectives:
Upon successful completion of this subject, students should:
- Be able to assess problem situations, the factors involved in decision making generally, and the factors involved in strategic managerial decision making in particular;
- Be able to demonstrate appropriate analytical skills using various management accounting concepts and technologies as well as evaluative skills for assessing the relevance of suggested solutions;
- Be able to explain and illustrate the process of strategic analysis, and demonstrate skills in using relevant techniques to analyse firm and competitor strategies;
- Be able to demonstrate an understanding of, and an ability to undertake product and profit planning;
- Be able to develop computer spreadsheet models appropriate to management accounting applications which aid in decision analysis;
- Be able to demonstrate an ability to work both individually and in cooperative team environments for learning, and collaborate in business problem-solving and decision-making exercises; and
- Be able to discuss the internationalisation of management accounting, including the nature and implications of global competitiveness, management accounting in multinational organisations, and cultural dimensions of management accounting.
Syllabus:
The subject will cover the following topics:
- The role, history and direction of management accounting;
- Decision-making under uncertainty;
- Simulation for complex decisions;
- Activity and strategic-based responsibility accounting, transfer pricing, ABC, balanced scorecard;
- Activity cost behaviour; regression; scatter plot and least squares;
- Tactical decision-making and environmental cost management;
- Capital investment decisions;
- Cost-volume-profit analysis and financial risk;
- Product profitability analysis and product mix strategies utilising linear programming, throughput accounting and theory of constraints;
- Inventory management;
- Network analysis;
- Measurement, quality control and reporting and performance evaluation;
- Internal control, corporate governance and ethics in an international managerial context.
