Abstract:
This subject examines a range of methods for resolving accounting issues in real world contexts. Students are provided with opportunities to scope a problem, strategically analyse problems, gather and analyse data relevant to the resolution of the problem and prepare professional reports setting out recommendations to management and other interested parties. Each student will complete a unique, practical and applied project in a real-world setting, such as their own or a client organisation, to find a solution to a pressing accounting-related business problem.

Objectives:
Upon successful completion of this subject, students should:
* be able to discuss the role and value of applied research in accounting which focuses on the understanding and resolution of practical problems
* be able to identify the nature and contexts of critical accounting problems in organisational and professional settings
* have demonstrated advanced real-world problem solving skills for analysing accounting problems in business and developing strategies for resolving problems
* have demonstrated advanced report writing competencies
* be able to undertake applied, project-oriented accounting research in business and/or government.
Syllabus:
The subject will cover the following topics:
* Introduction to applied accounting research * Problem identification and scoping techniques * Project strategy formulation * Project data gathering and analysis * Project reporting
