Abstract:
The subject is designed to give students an understanding of the principles of costing in the Australian health care industry. It will provide a coherent, comprehensive coverage of the issues involved in costing in a multi-faceted environment. It will provide an overview and understanding of the skills and knowledge currently demanded of accounting personnel working within Australia's health care industry

Objectives:
Upon successful completion of this subject, students should:
1. understand the importance of an effective cost measurement system in hospitals
2. understand the methods of measuring performance in hospitals
3. understand the organisational influences on hospital management
4. understand the current health information management issue
Syllabus:
The subject will cover the following topics:
- An overview of the Australian Health Care System. - Current microeconomic reform in the health care sector. - Performance measurement: the basis for controlling costs and quality. - Management theory and practice: management techniques and practice. - Strategic planning and financial management. - Use of the casemix classification system. - Information and the organisation of health services. - The impact of DRGs: their future in Australian Health Care.
