Abstract:
This subject explores the application of management accounting principles and techniques in business environments in the pursuit of strategic outcomes. The design of management control systems to achieve market strategy is analysed. Ethical behaviour, cultural sensitivity, sustainable economic development and social responsibility are viewed as drivers of management accounting practice.

Enrolment restrictions:
Available only to students enrolled in the Master of Professional Accounting (CPA) or the Master of Accounting Practice. Enrolment in this subject is further restricted to those students concurrently enrolled in the CPA Program professional level segment Strategic Management Accounting.
Objectives:
Upon successful completion of this subject, students should:
- Be able to critically evaluate the role of the management accountant as leader and driver of strategic outcomes within economically dynamic, socially responsible and sustainable business entities.
- Be able to explain and apply the concepts of value creation, competitive position, value chain analysis and management to the design of accounting and control systems.
- Be able to design, implement and manage performance measurement systems and explain the implications of behavioural responses and cultural sensitivities.
- Be able to apply value enhancing principles in planning, selecting, implementing, managing and measuring projects designed to achieve strategic outcomes.
- Be able to identify and critique the wider global issues affecting management accountants, including social, ethical and environmental issues.
